10 Most Important Things I learned in 2014

2014 was a year of mixed feelings for me. My husband was critically ill from June through July, and I almost thought we were going to lose him. But he recovered, and the second half of 2014 was filled with much joy.

This is Reg in August, as his bout with diverticulitis had been successfully dealt with.

This is Reg in August, after his bout with diverticulitis had been successfully dealt with.

As this is the final post I will be writing for this blog this year, I’d like to share some of my life moments of the past year in the 10 most important things I learned in 2014:

1. Having a really good doctor help gets you through the most trying times. My husband adores his doctor, and we are still making the 45-minute drive each way so that he can see Dr. Wiebe. Having a doctor you know and trust is especially critical when you have an unexplained condition in which the physician must partner with specialists and help you jump the queue to get faster medical service.

2. Good things can come out of tragedies. Through my husband’s illness, I learned I had much more fortitude than I was aware of. And I think the difficulties we encountered brought forth a deeper level of respect and appreciation for one another.

3. Hard work pays off. Self-publishing my book, “Chocolatour: A Quest for the world’s Best Chocolate” has been an amazing experience. But my hard work and professional partnerships rewarded me with an international award for my book. I won a bronze medal in the 2014 Readers’ Favorite International Book Awards. That has truly been the highlight of my writing career (to date!)

winning a readers favourite award was one of my top life moments of 2014

4.  A good book doesn’t sell itself. Getting good reviews and winning an award will not sell a book by itself. You’ve really got to market your book–and yourself as an author–in order to keep your book on the minds of people, so that when they are ready to buy, they think of you!

5. Being active and effective on social media takes a lot of time and effort. But it is essential to building my author’s platform and enables me to expand my reach and meet many of the fascinating people in the world of fine chocolate who are being profiled on my chocolate travel blog, and in my book.

6. That I really need to establish a mailing of people interested in my work as a chocolate writer, blogger, expert, speaker, and tour guide. I’ve heard it said by every expert in the marketing field: you need to create an e-newsletter to connect with your tribe, readers, and audience. I resolve to work on this next month, and hope to have the inaugural edition out in early February.

7. That the expression of gratitude is one of the most import virtues one can possess. I’ve really learned how important it is to appreciate everyone and everything good in my life. Have you?

8. I learned that I have pretty good intuitive powers when it comes to reading people. This was really reinforced by an unfortunate situation in my writing world. Trust your instincts!

9. I learned that as an extrovert, blogging provides a terrific outlet for my thoughts, feelings, and knowledge. Come February, I will have been blogging for  six years! Yes, this blog was launched in Feb, 2009, and I’ve stuck to a twice-monthly posting schedule ever since launching the travel blog as a separate entity. But I still love it!

10. I learned that blogging is meaningless unless there is a conversation going on. So I really appreciate everyone who reads, shares, and comments on my posts. Without you, I’d be talking into the wind, and that’s no fun!

I hope that 2014 provided some meaningful lessons for you as well. Please share! What is the most important thing you learned this year?

I look forward to continuing our discussion and our community in 2015. Until then, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and thanks very much to everyone who has been a part of my personal and professional life. This blog is a blend of both, and being a Gemini, that feels good. 🙂

If you hang your troubles on the line, you would gladly take yours in.

    • I know what you mean, Alice! Sometimes, we feel overwhelmed by whatever it is we are going thru. But when we see the troubles others have to face on a daily basis, we become more grateful for what we have and the life we are living. All the best to you in the coming year, my friend. 🙂

  2. I’m so glad your husband has fully recovered from his illness. And congratulations on your four year anniversary of blogging and of course your award for Chocolatour! Best wishes for continued success, health and happiness in 2015!

    • Thanks so much, Michele. It has indeed been a year of mixed emotions. Hopefully, the worst is behind us! Wishing you all the best for 2015, and I hope our paths will soon cross.

    • What a beautiful comment, John! Thanks so much for dropping into my blog and sharing your thoughts. I wish you the best very in 2015 and hope to see you early in the New Year. Cheers!

  4. First off thank goodness your husband if doing well now. What a trying time to get through. I’m glad things are looking brighter. :). And I totally agree with #5 and #10. Social media is so time consuming. And without our blog communities it would really take the fun out of blogging wouldn’t it, kind of like just talking to yourself. Lol Happy new year. May your 2015 be great!

    • Thanks for your comment, Susan. I feel so fortunate that we met via the BHB group and were able to take our friendship into the real world! I wish you all the best in 2015, and look forward to keeping in touch. 🙂

Thanks for a great reflective post Doreen. Congratulations on 4 years of blogging. I think you’re right that it does need to be a conversation and I really appreciated all the help & support ive had from my readers and fellow bloggers yourself included. So glad you can look back on your husbands illness now & that something good came from it – I know from similar experience that its a real tough situation to deal with. Happy holidays to you and your husband & I’ll see you in the New Year:-)

    • Thx for your comment and good wishes, Kathy. Yes, it’s hard to be believe that in Feb, I’ll have been blogging for 6 years! I’m so glad our paths have crossed and that we’ve had the opportunity to forge a friendship as a result of it. All the best to you in 2015!

  6. It was quite a year for you with some tough times, but I’m glad that overall it was filled with so much joy. I’m still reflecting on what I’ve learned in 2014. Some of your lessons apply (5, 7, 10). In moving and downsizing I’ve also learned how freeing it is to let go of things and clutter – literally and figuratively. As ever, I am grateful for the wonderful people in my life.

    • Thx so much for joining the conversation, Donna. I’m so grateful that our paths have crossed and connected us first online, but then … in person! It’s been great getting to know you. Have a wonderful Christmas and holiday time in AZ.

  7. Hi Doreen, Congratulations again on your book award! Also, so happy to see that Reg’s illness is truly over and that you are both appreciating one another so much after the struggle. I too am learning the importance of a mailing list and launches and many other things–and it seems we are following some of the same marketing experts! So wonderful to know that we’re together on this creative entrepreneur journey of learning. Lots of love, and best of luck on continuing to grow in 2015.

    • Thanks so much for your comment, good wishes, and friendship, Tracey! I always love it when you join the conversation.

Yes, I’m being pulled rather unwillingly into the realm of e-newsletters. I honestly don’t have time to read the ones I’d like to, but will create one that I’ll probably just send out once per month that combines the highlights from blog posts and other news not covered.

All the best to you, Merry Christmas, and hope to see you soon.

Quite a year, indeed! May 2015 be filled with as much success but without the drama of near death.

    • Thanks so much, Linda! It’s great having you in my circles of friends and supporters. I hope you have a magnificent holiday season, and wish you all the best for 2015. Cheers!
