Celebrating Great Canadian Chocolate

Peace by Chocolate is a Canadian company founded by the Hadhad family who came to Nova Scotia, Canada, as Syrian refugees in 1986. This book written by Jon Tattrie was published in 2020 and offers a fascinating account of the Hadhad family’s journey from Damascus, Syria, to Canada, where they continue to make delicious chocolate in the Syrian tradition. I am writing this post in 2025, and the need for ways to spread peace are more relevant than ever. ☮️

Peace by Chocolate is a terrific representative of great Canadian chocolate and is produced in Antigonish, Nova Scotia

Canada is a wonderful melting pot that encourages newcomers to embrace and share the traditions of their homeland.

Tareq Hadhad and his family have embraced their new home in Antigonish, a small town located approximately 160 kilometres (100 miles) northeast of Halifax, the capital of Nova Scotia. They now also have a shop right on the waterfront in Halifax. Be sure to check it out. And while you’re there, drop into Rousseau Chocolatier, a terrific award-winning artisan chocolatier offering more #greatcanadianchocolate.

  1. I haven’t seen the Peace by Chocolate movie yet but will find it on HBO. Always great to hear successful immigrant stories.

    1. Hi Janet. Yes, we enjoyed the Peace by Chocolate movie and I also have the book if you’d like to borrow it. It’s so inspiring to see refugees or immigrants who have fled their homeland and had the creativity and courage to recreate their lives here in Canada–one of the best melting pots in the world.

    1. Thx so much for your comment, Bola. Yes, it’s so inspiring when you hear the wonderful things some newcomers are doing. They should be saluted and cherished for their efforts, and for making the world a better place.

  2. I saw the movie about their story while on a flight. I was very excited to visit their shop in person while in Antigonish a few summers ago. There was so much to sample! Yum.
    Great article Doreen!

    1. Thx so much, Frances, and thx so much for bringing me a selection of Peace by Chocolate to enjoy. Their story is so inspiring. I’ve yet to make it to Antigonish, but we do plan to head east possibly this summer. Hope you’re doing well.

  3. What a delightful story, Doreen. A hard-working immigrant family starts a successful business that makes something delicious and promotes peace and harmony throughout the land. You should send this one in to Nice News and the Good News Network. Well done!
