getting around Miami

In the previous post, I showed you how easy it was to ride the Big Bus in Miami and hop on and off at the various stop to experience the city’s highlights. But Miami offers a plethora of other exciting options to help you see the city from on and above the ground, as well as from the water. Getting around Miami is fun and easy!

We really enjoyed our boat tour with the Island Queen Cruises. Island Queen has five different vessels. We were on the “Bayside Blaster”–one of the smaller boats in the fleet.

How fun it was, to begin the cruise with a bit of a water show courtesy of a fellow with a jetpack that enabled him to dance, twist, and turn above the water as we watched in amazement.

Many people arrive in Miami by cruise ship daily, as Miami has a huge cruise ship terminal that can berth 34 ships at a time, and is also a very busy freight shipping terminal. We spent some time riding alongside a massive cruise ship and felt dwarfed in our tiny sightseeing boat.

Miami is a terrific destination for visitors like me who like to be on the water. But it also offers choices for folks who enjoy a bird’s eye view. We travelled the reasonably priced metro and complimentary downtown “people mover” on several occasions and found them both to be comfortable and efficient.

Let’s talk about the various transportation options you may have tried in Miami during your visit, and what your experience was in getting around Miami.

  1. I’ve been to Miami to catch a cruise a few times. It’s neat to watch the city disappear while leaving port. I love cruises!

    • Thx for your comment, Krystle. Yes, Miami is quite the city! Im too, was familiar with its beautiful port prior to my recent visit. But I really loved getting to know South Beach! I hope you will have the opportunity to come and spend some time there.

Hi Chris and all. Thx for your words of encouragement. It really got too overwhelming trying to maintain a posting schedule for 3 separate sites. Here’s hoping we’ll have my new site up before the end of June!

And this week, I will indeed be posting about the finest chocolate in Miami. 🙂

  6. I always try to end up on the water too. Sightseeing by boat is often very enjoyable. That water jetpack has a name that I can’t remember. I’ve seen ads for it. It’s pretty crazy!

It’s been so long since I last visited Miami I doubt that I would recognize the city. It has a lot to offer and is interesting to see the different options of getting around.

    • Doreen says:

Hi Catarina and thanks for your comment. Yes, I bet you’d find Miami to be a lot different than when you last visited. There has been a lot of new development. In fact … while we were there, they were demolishing the Miami Herald’s building that was right on the waterfront, and in its place, a new resort facility will be built. I think the cruiseship industry has brought many new visitors to Miami and created many new opportunities for redevelopment.

  13. Doreen,
You have captured our stay in Miami–and our travels around the city–so well. I will catch up with this and give it all my own spin soon.
It was indeed a great city, with so many diverse neighbourhoods and attractions. We barely scratched the surface, but still manage to pack a lot into four days!

    • Doreen says:

Thanks so much for your comment, Christine, and for sharing the trip with me!

I had wanted to upload more pics for the post, but I just updated my operating software on my desktop Mac, and somehow, the iPhoto program is not functioning smoothly. I’m therefore having difficulty uploading photos to WordPress. Hopefully, I’ll get the situation ironed out soon, as I’m already due to do my next post on this blog come Monday!

Perhaps I’ll focus on the chocolate for the next post. Maybe that will bring me luck! 🙂
